Registering Your Domain Name

Before you're able to publicly launch your website, you will first need to register a domain name. Registering a domain name is a simple process that involves a little guess work on the Godaddy homepage and roughly $10. I’ve seen a lot of people panic at the idea of having to register a domain name.... hold your tears, it isn’t that serious! Here, I’ll break it down in a numbered list for you:
  1. Go to GoDaddy.com.
  2. Look for the words: "Start Domain Search".
  3. Start typing domain names that come to your mind.
  4. Remember to specify whether you're looking for a dot net, dot com, dot mobi, dot tv, or any of the other "dot's" that are available.
  5. Once you've found a domain name that is available and: (a) you like, (b) is as short as possible, and (c) is easy to remember, you'll be ready to click on the button that has "Proceed to Checkout" written on it.
You should be able to take it from there. You see, I told you it wasn't that bad! That's all there is to it, 5 simple steps to registering your domain name.

Tips on Choosing a Good Domain Name

When searching for your domain name, remember to choose one that is easy to remember and that is as short as possible. Unfortunately, most of the shorter domain names are already taken, so be creative!

For example:

If your company is called: "Titanium Print Press" and TitaniumPrintPress.com is already registered, you might try something like: TitaniumPrintShop.com or TitaniumPrintingSolutions.com

You should also check to see whether or not the dot net or dot org's are availablel. If you just must get your hands on the dot com, you'll want to consult a domain broker to negotiate a deal for you, or you may even want to make an offer to the owner of the domain yourself.

Whichever direction you decide to go in, you should first visit the website in question in order to have an idea of what you are getting into. If it is a parked page with nothing but PPC advertising on it, you may have a shot at picking the domain up at a reasonable price. On the flip-side to that, if it is a fully functional, highly trafficked website, you might be up against an imovable mountain. If this turns out to be the case, my best advice is to move on and return to the GoDaddy homepage to start your domain search all over again!

It is also important to have a good understanding of the topic that you are going to base your website on. Below is a short list of a few common, yet important areas of domain registration.

Domain Cost

The majority of domain registrars will usually charge anywhere from $7 to $11 to register a generic top-level domains. Most providers will include a discounted rate should you choose to register multiple domains and/or pay for multiple years of registration at one time.

Domain Name Variations

You can register and own as many domain names as you’d like. In addition to .com, many people register the .net and .org variations of their primary domain name just to be sure of their protection.

Domain Activation

It will take about 72 hours before your domain is active throughout the whole of the internet. You’ll find that this is the same regardless of who you register your domain name with.
